Test GAP Assessment
Healthcare is at the cusp of numerous transformations – to improve operational efficiency, churn out accurate and secure information and meet the various regulatory compliances such as Meaningful Use Stage II and ICD10, among others. These regulatory compliances play a major role in the healthcare provider space.
They impact every system (including electronic health record (EHR)/ electronic medical record (EMR) and third party vendor applications. Several regulatory changes need to be made to accommodate the situation at hand. To be better prepared for these changes and to effectively reuse the current testing assets, healthcare providers need to aggressively invest in Test Gap Assessment.
As mentioned in our previous blog - Comprehensive Test Repositories, rather than creating new test cases, one should invest in building a comprehensive test repository and utilize it from a testing perspective.
The first step towards this is a test gap assessment, which requires evaluating the current stage of the existing test repository and analyzing the gaps in terms of end-to-end workflow. This would help identify the re-usability of the existing test repository and reduce the effort required.
Gap assessment can be performed on the repositories created for robust products such as EHRs/EMRs (EPIC, Meditechand Cerner) as these products undergo upgrade/modifications to comply with the evolving regulatory mandates.
The Testing GAP methodology can be used with three different phases:
- Analyze the current situation
- Identify the future state
- Identify gaps and suggest recommendations to resolve them
Carrying out testing on EHRs/EMRs requires huge efforts and investment for providers. Hence, testing GAP assessment will help providers:
- Know the percentage of existing test repository that can be used, through percentage of re-usability
- Address the current gap and effort required to fill those gaps
- Keep a count of additional test cases required with its effort
- Plan for the future roadmap
